Rachel speaks with Gay Harrison, author of "Midwife to Medium"

Being an author can be a fairly solitary existence - so I love to reach out to fellow authors, especially those who write in the same genre and feature similar themes as my writing does.  These authors are all working so hard to put brilliant and thought provoking writing out into the world, so it is a pleasure to find them and a privilege to ask them a few questions about their writing career.

Today I am featuring the work of Gay Harrison - a brilliant spiritual medium who has turned her spiritual experiences and teachings into a fantastic epic of a fictional story that is packed full of spiritual learning.  You can find Gay's book HERE on Amazon (affiliate link).

RD: What was the scariest part of starting out as a novelist?

GH:I didn't find it scary starting out because I've been writing for years. My problem was that I never finished anything, so I suppose the scary part was actually finishing it, then thinking that I had to do something with it. I hadn't the faintest idea how to go about publishing anything..

RD: What do you wish you knew back then that you know now?

G.H:That the first draft is never the finished article, and to treat it as the 'bones' of a story. So many times I thought I had finished it, only to find that there was so much to add/change. Now it's quite comforting to know that you just have to get it down, and worry about fleshing it out afterwards.

RD: Why did you choose to write in the philosophical/spiritual fiction genre?

G.H: I chose to write in a spiritual genre because I love spiritual philosophy but didn't want it to be a 'religious' book. Even now, I think my book is for a selective audience, and perhaps I should be less philosophical and more generalised in my next book.

RD: What are the writing related things you still struggle with?

G.H:The writing related things I still struggle with is putting myself in someone else's place and being that character. This doesn't always happen and certainly didn't in 'Midwife to Medium', but it seems to be happening with my current book

RD: Who in particular helped you along the way and how did you meet them?

G.H:You did Rachel! You've helped me enormously along the way, in fact it wouldn't have been seen in print without you!! I met you at the book launch of your first book. Thankyou Rachel. Other people who have helped me - I was also helped with the cover by two people, both friends. Both are artists. The person who painted the cover, I met at a meditation evening, and the person who 'made' the cover, I gave somer spiritual help to when she was in need, and this was how she repaid me. It's wonderful how people come into one's life.

RD:  What is the best thing a reader/fan could do for you, or has done for you?

G.H:The best thing a reader/fan can do is read then promote and review your book. I've found that some readers lend it out instead of encouraging others to buy it.
